The author, Shirley George Frazier, is brilliant. I give this book 5 star. Anyone who has a home-based business should get a copy. Her advice works. I have tried them and it works. I’m impressed to the point that I tell everybody I meet about this book. If you want to increase sales, start with this book. This book guides you step by step on strategies. If you don’t read this book, you are doing both yourself and your business an injustice.

  2. Jenny Bruner says:

I thought this book would be helpful with teaching me some basics about starting a home business. I was highly dissapointed. Do not waiste your money on this book. It does not explain enough information to you to be useful and what it does expalin is not that helpful either. This was a total waiste of money.

  3. I liked this book. It was simple, straightforward, and easy to read. It’s title only claims that it will provide some marketing strategies for the small business. So it’s hard to fault this book for failing to offer much substantial content. But since my quick read of this book didn’t set my world on fire I can’t give it the max star rating. This book has the following chapters:

    0. Introduction

    1. Your marketing plan: The first step to success

    2. Network marketing: Solo style

    3. Put it in print: Direct mail marketing techniques

    4. Maximum attention through print media coverage

    5. Making yourself a broadcast media darling

    6. Technological tools and more that maximize marketing

    7. Internet help to the rescue

    8. Security issues and solutions

    9. Gifts and incentives

    10. Six marketing ideas for savvy soloists

    10a. In summary

The real power of this book as far as I’m concerned is the two sample marketing plans included for hypothetical companies. One plan is for a retail business and the other for a service business. Neither plan is anything special. But they are something that the reader can read, visualize, dissect, and use as a template of sorts for a plan they will be writing for their own small business. It’s always easier to write something if you have a sample to start you off.

Chapter 2 is not about the network marketing also known as direct sales. Chapter 2 is about pounding the pavement and getting known by meeting people. A book on this subject that I highly recommend is “Make Your Contacts Count” (ISBN: 0814474020). Chapter 3 may be applicable to some boutique professional service firms, but if I had been writing this book I would have left it out.

Chapters 4 and 5 both cover various angles of typcial public relations tactics. You’ll need to do things that can get you known as an expert and/or are newsworthy. Three books that relate here are “6 Steps to Free Publicity” (ISBN: 1564146758), “Promote Your Business” (ISBN: 1865089311), and “Riches in Niches” (ISBN: 1564149307).

Chapters 6 and 7 cover Internet marketing. A nice short book on the subject is “Plug Your Business” (ISBN: 0977240622). Consider reading my book review for it posted on Amazon to see other books I like on this subject.

And it surprised me that Chapter 8 was included in this book regarding Intellectual Property issues. But it was nice to see. An interesting read on the subject is “Intellectual Property” (ISBN: 9781591841777).

The book has a nice summary and conclusion. Both helped pull the book together for me. All in all, this book covers how to devise marketing plans, to get publicity, to set up an Internet presence, and to learn about IP issues. Pretty good. 4 stars!
