Understanding how a business makes profit & treats expenses is an accounting role. Accounting ensures that you don’t confuse profit with cash flow. Profit equals sales revenue minus expenses. Many expenses are recorded by decreasing an asset other than cash.
Budgeting is another business use of accounting. Part of financial decision making, it helps a business manager focus on factors that deliver a profit boost.
Quickbooks and Dynacom are two accounting packages I’ve used professionally. Dynacom is specially useful as a small business accounting software for SOHO environments.
